Ask500 beta

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I vote?
To cast your vote for the active question, click the green button at the top-right corner of the map. You can also vote on upcoming questions below and on the question list.
How do I suggest a question?
Click the green "Ask a Question" button on the home page. (You may need to create an account if you don't have one yet.) Guidelines for creating good questions can be found here.
How are the polls on the homepage chosen?
Users add "Points," or upvote, questions that they like and would like to see answered by the community. Questions with the most points are promoted up the the question list until, hopefully, they appear on the homepage. If a poll doesn't make it after 24 hours, it's removed from the lineup. All polls, however, remain available to voters and can be linked to or embedded on websites.
Can I put a poll on my blog or website?
Yes! After submitting a poll, the "Embed" option will give you code you can copy-and-paste anywhere on the web. And you can embed any poll question you like. If you'd like your site to automatically show the latest homepage poll question, try our widget.
How does Ask500People gather votes?
  • People put our widget on their sites and help us gather votes.

  • We've made arrangements with several high-traffic sites to be able to display polls there when needed.
Who is answering the polls?
People vote on our site and on hundreds of partner sites across the world. Most respondents are simply people who ran into one of our polls, answered it, and continued on their way.
Why aren't polls getting 500 votes?
When we first launched our site in beta, we saw 100 votes per question. We're finally growing into our name, and are seeing over 400 votes on many questions that make it to the home page. Ideally you'll see more than 500 votes more and more often, but not every poll will cross that threshold.
How do I report a bad poll?
Some poll questions may be too sensitive, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate for the Ask500People community. (See our community guidelines and Terms of Service.) and If you see a poll that could be problematic, click "Options" next to the question and check the box for "Mark as Inappropriate." If enough people click "Mark as Inappropriate," the poll disappears.
What are the arrows and points shown next to comments?
The comments are often the most interesting part of a poll, where users can discuss things beyond the available answers. And similar to how users choose the polls that appear on the homepage, users can add "Points," or upvote, comments that they find valuable, insightful, or simply enjoyable. Users can also subtract "Points" or downvote comments that they think are not helpful, not constructive, or otherwise not appropriate. Downvoted comments are then hidden from the default comment view.
Can businesses use this service?
Yes. Businesses can create and launch questions from the privacy of the control panel, for reasonable rates. Unlike the questions running on the main page, your results are private and you're guaranteed that your question will have access to the network. Find out more about our Premium Service.
